A Heritage Brand Reimagined Through Corporate Identity, eCommerce, Product Photography and Digital Marketing
A South African Clothing Legend, Reimagined
Some brands are built from scratch. Others come with a history, a reputation and a legacy worth preserving.
For Dutch Ink Advertising House, working with Sterling Clothing was an honour and an opportunity to breathe fresh creative energy into an established South African clothing brand.
Our objective was not to reinvent Sterling’s heritage, but to build upon it.
We undertook a comprehensive brand revitalisation programme that brought together corporate identity development, eCommerce website design, extensive garment photography, social media management and the design of three product catalogues.
The result was a refreshed brand presentation that connected Sterling’s established identity with a contemporary retail and digital environment.
Respecting the Past. Designing for the Future.
A heritage brand carries something that cannot simply be designed overnight: history.
The challenge with Sterling Clothing was to introduce a fresh visual direction while retaining the character and recognition associated with the brand.
Dutch Ink reset the corporate identity, developing a more cohesive visual language around Sterling’s distinctive orange wordmark, rugged outdoor imagery and confident product-focused communication.
The new direction placed greater emphasis on durability, functionality and the brand’s connection to outdoor living.
The campaign message “Clothing That Lasts for Generations” captured this positioning, providing a clear creative foundation for the brand’s renewed presentation.
Corporate Identity and Brand Development
The corporate identity refresh established a consistent direction for Sterling’s marketing materials and digital platforms.
Our creative approach focused on stronger typography, more considered photography, earthy colour palettes and a visual identity that complemented the brand’s outdoor clothing range.
Rather than treating individual advertisements as standalone designs, we developed a coordinated brand presentation that could extend across product catalogues, social media, website content and promotional campaigns.

eCommerce Website Design and Development
A significant part of the Sterling project involved building a new online store.
The website was designed to bring Sterling’s product range into a contemporary eCommerce environment while maintaining the refreshed brand identity.
The online store combined product-led navigation, garment photography, promotional messaging and an outdoor-inspired visual direction.
The objective was to give customers a dedicated platform to discover Sterling’s clothing range and shop online.
For Dutch Ink, this was an opportunity to bring together WordPress eCommerce development, WooCommerce website design, brand strategy and digital retail presentation within one project.

Garment Photography: Hundreds of Products, One Consistent Presentation
Product photography formed a substantial part of the Sterling Clothing project.
Our team photographed hundreds of garments to create a consistent visual presentation across the online store and marketing materials.
For clothing brands, product photography is an essential part of the online shopping experience.
Customers need to see the garment clearly, understand its appearance and evaluate the details before purchasing.
The photographic work supported the wider eCommerce development by creating a coordinated image library for Sterling’s product range.
It also provided valuable visual assets for catalogues, promotional artwork and social media content.
Three Clothing Catalogues: Bringing the Range Together
Alongside the website and product photography, Dutch Ink designed three Sterling Clothing catalogues.
These catalogues formed an important part of the brand’s product presentation, bringing together garment imagery, product information and the refreshed corporate identity.
The catalogue development required consistency in layout, typography, photography and overall visual direction.
By maintaining a common design language across all three publications, the catalogues helped reinforce Sterling’s renewed brand identity.

Social Media Management and Digital Brand Communication
Dutch Ink also managed Sterling Clothing’s social media presence.
The creative direction brought together outdoor-inspired lifestyle imagery, product features and branded promotional communication.
The objective was to create a recognisable visual presence that reflected the brand’s heritage while presenting its clothing range in a contemporary way.
The refreshed identity provided a foundation for consistent communication across social media and the online store.

A Complete Clothing Brand Revitalisation
The Sterling Clothing project demonstrates how an established brand can benefit from a coordinated creative approach.
Our involvement included:
- Corporate identity refresh and brand development.
- Brand positioning and creative direction.
- eCommerce website design and development.
- Photography of hundreds of garments.
- Three professionally designed clothing catalogues.
- Social media management.
- Product marketing and promotional artwork.
- Consistent visual branding across digital and print.
Rather than addressing each element independently, the project brought these disciplines together to create a unified brand presentation.
A Privilege to Be Part of the Sterling Story
At Dutch Ink, we have a particular appreciation for brands with history.
There is something rewarding about taking an established name, understanding what makes it special and helping it connect with a new generation of customers.
Sterling Clothing was one of those projects.
We were proud to contribute to its next chapter, from resetting the corporate identity and developing the online store to photographing hundreds of garments, managing social media and producing three catalogues.
It was an honour to help revive a South African clothing legend.
And it remains a project that reflects what we value most about brand development: respecting where a brand comes from while creating opportunities for where it can go next.
