Should you pay for your website once-off or monthly? Both are legitimate ways to buy a website in South Africa, and the right one depends on your cash flow, how long you plan to keep the website and how much of the running of it you want handled for you.
This guide explains how each option works, what each one costs over time and what to ask before you sign anything. We are Dutch Ink, a Durban-based web design agency that offers both, so we have used our own prices as the worked example. All Dutch Ink prices exclude VAT.
The short answer
Neither option is automatically better.
- Choose once-off if you want to own the website outright, can fund the project upfront and are happy to arrange hosting and maintenance separately.
- Choose monthly if you want to start with less cash and have design, hosting, maintenance and support looked after in one monthly fee.
The honest way to decide is to compare the total cost over the time you will keep the website, and to compare what is included, not only the headline price.
How does a once-off website payment work?
You pay one project fee for the design and build, often in stages, and the finished website is handed over to you. After launch you arrange and pay for the running costs yourself.
- Upfront cost: higher, because the whole build is paid for at the start.
- Running costs: the domain name, hosting and maintenance are separate. ProCompare (2025) lists a domain at about R100 to R200 a year, hosting from about R50 to R300 or more a month, and a comprehensive maintenance plan at R500 to R2,000 a month.
- Changes after launch: usually quoted separately, or covered by a maintenance plan.
Dutch Ink once-off packages start from R9,500 for a custom-designed website. See our website design South Africa page for what each package includes.
How does a monthly website plan work?
A monthly plan is often called Website as a Service (WaaS) or a website subscription. Instead of one large project fee, you pay a monthly fee that covers the build and the running of the website.
- Lower starting cost: you do not pay the full build upfront.
- Bundled running costs: with Dutch Ink WaaS, design, hosting, maintenance and support are included in the monthly fee, and the Business and Premium plans include monthly update hours.
- A commitment: Dutch Ink WaaS plans have a minimum 12-month agreement.
Our Kick Start plan is R740 a month, the Business plan is R1,499 a month and the Premium plan is R2,499 a month.
What does each option cost over time?
Here is what our three packages add up to if you pay monthly, compared with the once-off fee.
| Package | Once-off fee | Monthly fee | 12 months monthly | 24 months monthly | 36 months monthly |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kick Start | R9,500 | R740 | R8,880 | R17,760 | R26,640 |
| Business | R19,500 | R1,499 | R17,988 | R35,976 | R53,964 |
| Premium | R35,500 | R2,499 | R29,988 | R59,976 | R89,964 |
All prices exclude VAT. The once-off fee covers the build only. The monthly totals include hosting and maintenance, and monthly update hours on the Business and Premium plans.
Over a long period the monthly total passes the once-off fee. That is expected, because the monthly fee keeps paying for hosting, maintenance and support for as long as you stay on the plan.

What the numbers do not show
A once-off fee only buys the build. To compare fairly, add what you would otherwise pay to run the website.
- Hosting and a domain name renewed every year.
- Maintenance and security: WordPress and plugin updates, backups and monitoring. Dutch Ink website maintenance starts from R849 a month.
- Content changes: your own time, or an agency’s time.
Add these to a once-off build and the monthly cost of running the website can come close to, or exceed, a monthly plan. Equally, if you already have hosting and someone to look after the website, a once-off build may cost you less overall.
Which option suits your business?
Choose once-off if…
- You want to own the website outright.
- You can fund the project upfront.
- You already have hosting and someone to maintain the website, or you are happy to arrange them.
- You expect to keep the website for many years.
Choose monthly if…
- You want to start with less cash.
- You want one provider to look after design, hosting, maintenance and support.
- You do not have a technical person in your business.
- You prefer a predictable monthly cost and are comfortable with a minimum term.
What to ask before you sign
Whichever option you choose, ask these questions and get the answers in writing.
- What exactly is included: pages, content writing, forms and SEO setup?
- Who owns the website, the design, the content and the domain?
- How long is the agreement, and what is the total cost over that time?
- What happens if you cancel: notice period, early exit costs, and what happens to the website, domain and hosting?
- Is hosting included, and what support do you get after launch?
- Are edits and updates included or charged separately?
These questions follow advice from UK web agency Expand Digital (July 2026), adapted for South African businesses.
What happens if you cancel a monthly plan?
Dutch Ink WaaS packages have a minimum 12-month agreement. Cancellation is subject to your package terms, including any applicable notice period and arrangements for your website, domain and hosting. Our team will explain your options before you make a decision.
Once-off or monthly for an online store?
The same thinking applies. Our ecommerce website design packages are R19,500 once-off or R1,490 a month (First Cart), R29,990 once-off or R2,499 a month (Let’s Shop), and R54,999 once-off or R4,499 a month (Market Force). All prices exclude VAT.
Frequently asked questions about paying for a website
A monthly plan costs less to start and includes hosting and maintenance, while a once-off payment costs more upfront and gives you ownership straight away. Over several years the monthly total can be higher, so compare what each option includes. For example, our Kick Start plan adds up to R8,880 over 12 months, against a R9,500 once-off fee.
Website as a Service is a website you pay for monthly. At Dutch Ink it includes professional design, hosting, ongoing maintenance and monthly website updates for one monthly fee.
Dutch Ink WaaS plans have a minimum 12-month agreement, and cancellation is subject to the package terms. Always ask any provider about the term, the notice period and what happens to your website, domain and hosting if you leave.
A monthly plan keeps the starting cost low and spreads the cost over time, which suits many small businesses. A once-off build can cost less over a long period if you can fund it upfront and manage the running costs. The best choice depends on your cash flow and how long you plan to keep the website.
