How Much Does a Website Cost in South Africa? A 2026 Price Guide

How much does a website cost in South Africa? A 2026 website price guide from Dutch Ink

Ask three agencies for a website quote and you will probably get three very different numbers. One says R3,000, another says R30,000, and neither explains why.

This guide explains what drives the price of a website in South Africa, what published price guides say you should expect to pay in 2026, and what you will pay after launch for hosting, a domain and maintenance.

We are Dutch Ink, a Durban-based web design agency, so we have also included our own prices. You will see exactly what each package costs and what it includes.

How much does a website cost in South Africa?

Published price guides put professional business websites in South Africa at roughly R5,000 to R60,000, depending on the number of pages and the features you need. Simple template sites can cost less, and large ecommerce or custom-built sites can cost a lot more.

  • Basic or starter website: R1,500 to R5,000 for a template site of a few pages (SO Websites, April 2026), or R5,000 to R20,000 for a designed brochure-style business site (ProCompare, 2025).
  • Custom-designed business website: R8,000 to R15,000 (SO Websites, April 2026), rising to R20,000 to R60,000 for a lead-generation site with more pages and features (ProCompare, 2025).
  • Ecommerce, booking or web app: R20,000 to R60,000 (SO Websites, April 2026), while ProCompare (2025) lists ecommerce websites at R13,000 to R25,000.
  • Fully custom or very large builds: R60,000 and up (ProCompare, 2025).

These ranges overlap and sometimes disagree. That is normal, because the word website covers everything from a one-page template to a custom online store. What matters is what is included in the price.

Dutch Ink does not build from templates. Every website we build is custom designed around your brand, your customers and your goals, so our packages belong in the custom-design ranges above, not the template ones.

Dutch Ink does not use templates. Every package is a custom design built around your brand, so the right comparison is with custom-design prices, not template prices. Compare what is included, not only the price.

What affects the price of a website?

Several things decide whether a website costs a few thousand rand or a few tens of thousands.

  • Number of pages: a 3-page website costs less than a 30-page website.
  • Design: a template costs less than a design built around your brand. Every Dutch Ink website is the second kind.
  • Functionality: forms, bookings, payments and other features add build time.
  • Content: writing, photography and video can be supplied by you or created for you.
  • SEO: a search-ready structure, page speed and technical setup take time to do properly.
  • Who builds it: freelancers, small agencies and large agencies price differently, and so do their support and guarantees.

A useful rule: the more of the work you want done for you, the higher the price. A fair quote tells you exactly what is included.

What does a website cost after launch?

The build is only part of the cost. Plan for these ongoing costs as well.

  • Domain name: about R100 to R200 a year (ProCompare, 2025).
  • Hosting: from about R50 a month for basic shared hosting to R300 or more for faster, stronger hosting (ProCompare, 2025).
  • Maintenance and security: R500 to R2,000 a month for a comprehensive plan (ProCompare, 2025). Dutch Ink website maintenance starts from R849 per month.
  • Updates and content: new pages, blog posts and product changes, done by you or by your agency.
  • SEO and marketing: a website does not bring visitors on its own. Search engine optimisation and advertising are separate costs.

With our monthly plans, hosting and maintenance are already included, so there are fewer separate bills to manage.

Once-off or monthly: which is better?

Neither is automatically better. It depends on how you prefer to pay and how much support you want.

Once-off: you pay one project fee and the website is yours to keep. The upfront cost is higher, and you arrange hosting and maintenance separately.

Monthly (Website as a Service): a lower starting cost, with design, hosting, maintenance and support bundled into one monthly fee. For example, our Kick Start plan is R740 a month, which adds up to R8,880 over 12 months. Our WaaS plans have a minimum 12-month agreement.

Choose once-off if you want to own the website outright and are happy to manage the running costs. Choose monthly if you want to start with less cash and have someone look after hosting, security and updates.

How to compare website quotes

When you have more than one quote, put the same questions to each company.

  • What exactly is included: pages, design, forms and SEO setup?
  • Who owns the website, the design and the domain when the project ends?
  • Is hosting included, and what does it cost after the first year?
  • How many rounds of changes are included?
  • Is the website mobile responsive and built with SEO in mind?
  • What support do you get after launch?
  • Are there any extra costs, such as content, photography or plugins?

A low price that leaves these questions unanswered often costs more in the end.

Is a cheap website worth it?

A very cheap website can work for a hobby or a quick test. For a business that needs enquiries, the design, speed, mobile experience and search setup matter, and these are the parts that cheap packages tend to leave out.

Dutch Ink never uses templates. Every website is custom designed around your brand and your customers.

Weigh the cost of a website against the business it can bring in, not only the price on the quote.
